In June 1988, George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam of Boy Meets Girl were at a Whitney Houston concert when a real falling star streaked across the sky. That fleeting, magical moment sparked the idea for “Waiting for a Star to Fall,” a song they initially offered to Houston before deciding to record it themselves under the guidance of producer Arif Mardin.
